The story of A Summer Home Inc. begins with the formation of our parent company, Johnson Furniture Manufacturing Company, in 1947. Our grandfather, Grier Johnson Sr., founded the parent company in Conway, SC to build furniture for the local homeowners. After Hurricane Hazel destroyed the Grand Strand in October of 1954, the Myrtle Beach hospitality industry exploded and Johnson Furniture had a new clientele – the hotels and motels along the beach. Following in his footsteps, our father, Grier Johnson Jr., took over the company in 1970 and relocated our manufacturing facilities to the Myrtle Beach area in order to maintain closer ties to this new customer base. Grier Jr. was instrumental in refocusing our company mission of manufacturing commercial grade furniture in order to withstand the heavy use of hotel guests. His children, Tracy, Jess and Norton, joined the company in the 1990s. With the relocation of our manufacturing facility back to Conway, SC in 2006, our sister, Tracy Johnson Graham, formed A Summer Home Inc. in order to maintain a local presence in the Myrtle Beach area and provide condo owners and hotels with a beautiful and convenient shopping location. Following her untimely death in 2016, Norton stepped into Tracy’s role while continuing to honor her legacy and commitment to offering the highest quality products and our clients.
